My biggest frustration with Freud is that he read Darwin, was inspired by his sexual selection theory, then pretended he'd invented every sexual insight himself, without really understanding evolution. Nietzsche fell into the same temptation to hide his intellectual influences.

Does anyone also get the feeling that, although you know that Freud has been discredited, and his ideas absolutely don't hold up under scientific scrutiny, at least some of it intuitively kind of feels right? Or is that just his enormous shadow over our way of thinking?

Example: I'm doing research on depression. I'm reading Society and Its Discontents and Mourning and Melancholia. Even though I don't believe Freud, I understand the idea that a lot of psychological problems arise from the clash between our primitive impulses and society's mores.

Yes, the 'self' is hidden from oneself. But there is no supervising self inside our self, and that was Freud's central mistake.
