This piece by @slatestarcodex is the best essay ever written about social media. It's hard to understand what's going on without reading it, and easy after reading it. https://slatestarcodex.com/2014/12/17/the-toxoplasma-of-rage/ …

Great essay. I've thought about Ferguson a lot lately. I feel like that was a turning point in many relations on social media. Almost nothing before had such impact. 2014 to now deserves its own timeline.

That essay is essentially the unread terms of service for all social media. Absolutely incredible analysis.

Controversy attracts attention to sell advertising. The solution is to ban for-profit journalism and social media.

Interesting, but I think he’s wrong about rape and feminism. In the feminist canon, rape or the threat thereof enforces the patriarchal order, as a primarily political act. http://bit.ly/1ejrvJ1

The book gives reason to believe that the mass movement shifts the conversation in a positive way, but the corresponding form of activism (the PETA school) doesn’t seem to carry with it the same benefit. Did I read this essay poorly? Or the book?
