I've heard that the correlation between scores on different mental tests becomes weaker at higher IQ levels, relative to low. 1) Is this true? 2) If so, what does it tell us?

That's called Spearman's Law of Diminishing Returns. It's still controversial. Theoretical interpretation is unclear. I think it may be a reflection of pleiotropic mutation load.

Finding a g factor across cultures does not suddenly elevate it to a valid measurement for "intelligence". Its core assumptions are still flawed for anybody who understand the basic math behind factor analysis. Your defense of g is politically motivated http://bactra.org/weblog/523.html

I sometimes wonder if many academics resist the idea IQ is at least partly genetic as they dont want to admit their success in life has been due to chance and ‘IQ privilege’. You have to have a PhD in a grevience study to not believe some people are naturally smarter than others.
