If we added enough centrists and conservatives to balance out the ideological bias, that could help.

Lots of academics are centrists. Some are moderate lefties, usually through strange routes like studying history and seeing how things go. It’s a myth that the right have somehow been forced out. Education (understanding stuff) makes you less right wing, mostly.

Not in my experience. Folks on the left are much less tolerant of dissent. Ever notice how truly open forums contain a mix of views but 'moderated' forums drive out the dissenting views and thus veer left?
