There is a theory that we never initially intended to eat wheat and barley, we planted it to lure herbivores so that we didn't have to traipse off to their feeding grounds. I'm sure you are familiar with this. I think of it whenever I think of Facebook's business model.

Lol Perhaps they don't know because they are not paying attention to the patterns behind the targeted ads or maybe they have not been paying attention to the news for the last decade...or maybe they just have not yet learned that there is no such thing as a free lunch.

It goes deeper than that. Even if they knew, a large portion wouldn't care. There have been countless stories in the agora detailing FB's brazen violation of privacy, and categorical collection/selling of personal information. If they haven't left by now, likely they never will.

One must assume high levels of ignorance in any understanding of both markets and democracy. Are we even educable?
