And yet, shelves of unread books are useful reminders that we know little compared to what we could know, so we should strive for intellectual humility.https://twitter.com/sentientist/status/1084868600270225408 …

If you’re upset that @MarieKondo recommends getting rid of books, have you considered signaling how well read you are with writing and conversation rather than with full shelves?

I have a conversion ratio model of my books. As long as significant % gets converted into knowledge it justifies getting more books

Since 99% of information (books in this case) are noise (at best useless, at worst, detrimental), the question is quality, but it cannot be answered objectively. Meditations is worth more to me than a full bookcase of impressive titles without Meditations.

There is nothing magical about books on printed paper. Somehow we still think people are more intelligent for reading actual physical books, rather than reading the same thing electronically.

If Hume clutters those book shelves of unread books, then we are deprived of his savage take down of knowledge...or what we think knowledge is.

I really enjoy looking through people's books when I get the chance. I find it gives me a significantly more accurate snapshot of who the person is in 5 minutes than all the information that they could present to me verbally over the course of 2-3 hours. https://twitter.com/sentientist/status/1084868600270225408 …

..because a less wasteful, more portable, & just overall 'better' (search, highlight, annotation, etc) technology is available, I eschew paper/ink. Of course, I miss the texture/scent of paper books - but digital documets & e-book readers are, inevitably, the future.

Unfortunately they’re also a physical reality, which is a pain in the a** when has to move, especially if one is forced to downsize. Luckily the solution is here: ebooks. I get both the useful humility & don’t have to move them(b/c of connections I now have a 30k+ ebook library).

Books are the *worst* category of item to have to move. Hands down.
