I agree it's well-established. But most of the modeling about why discounting exists seems to take a very individualistic, almost solipsistic approach, as if personal death renders all future benefits irrelevant to one's blood-line or civilization.

I'm not quite following. I don't think there's much modeling about *why* the discounting exists, but I agree that modeling of the discounting itself is very individual-centric.
