This doesn't make sense evolutionarily, if you broaden the scope of reward to include offspring and kin. They're likely to be around even if you aren't, so discounting should be counter-selected.
Nobody is arguing that there are not other drives. But also the fact that people do discount future rewards is well established.
I agree it's well-established. But most of the modeling about why discounting exists seems to take a very individualistic, almost solipsistic approach, as if personal death renders all future benefits irrelevant to one's blood-line or civilization.
