Usually I'm skeptical about cultural explanations for the lower percentages of women in certain fields. But, I worked in an Economics dept for 4 years, and the phrase 'toxic masculinity' is a fair description of the atmosphere in many Econ seminars.https://twitter.com/jimtankersley/status/1081542980777988096 …

Then what we'd need is a solid definition of what you mean when you use the term "toxic masculinity." I claim that the term is a cheap and lazy way of denigrating men. What do you mean when you use it?

Economists acting like belligerent assholes in a misguided attempt to pretend that an intellectual seminar is a form of MMA. I agree that in 99% of cases 'toxic masculinity' is a nonsensical male-shaming term that should be avoided.

What do we call it when women exhibit the same behaviors? Why assign a gender to behaviors that both men and women display?

2 bonobos walk in the jungle: they spot food and shade. Which one will have the food&shade? Maybe one will groom the other to have a tiny place. We all probably act like that. Socio economics statuts can make the brain trigger bad behavior. Should we learn Behave&it’s biology?

Can they all just take a leaf from @tylercowen's book? (Even his actual books are short, succinct, and never shouty.)

Rephrasing for clarification to understand: "combat for social status." Does this accurately reflect your intent? If not, can you clarify? This is not toxic, or masculinity. I may be unpleasant to some, but it is not poisonous, and is not unique to male behaviour.

I would rephrase it as "unnecessarily/overly aggressive combat for social status". status battles can become pathological when they oppress competent members from expressing their valuable insights because they aren't willing to be as aggressive

Maybe it’s toxic only for women, not men, like a feminine environment would be toxic for a man?

... which leads me to wonder what people might mean when they use the word "toxic." I notice that it seems difficult for people to point to very precise and specific meanings. Do they mean pushing and shoving? Do they mean being snippy? Do they mean the use of subtext?
