Brilliant literature, classics, multi-lingual scholars make the best public intellectuals—i.e. you should just be versed in EVERYTHING (sure Daniel Dennett is the science version of this—but practically speaking he’s had little to no breakthrough) Elocution & eloquence prevails.
Arguably we know about more things that are publicly relevant than most PhDs in the physical or biological sciences, we show less arrogance than most economists, and we aren't as PC as most 'social scientists'.
