Why is it nonsense? Shouldn't citizens be able to know what's legal and what isn't? If not why not?

Why should government regulate 1000s of aspects of society?

I don't # of elements is a good measure of complexity or over/underdone regulation. The short answer would be that hypothetically there are 1000s of types of interactions and activities that benefit from an enforcement mechanism preventing nash equilibria.

Ahh sorry the average citizen can’t remember each of the carcinogenic additives we’re trying to keep out of food so I guess we have to make them legal

People can't remember all ten commandments without looking them up...and nearly half of those are useless. I just focus on not killing things or sticking my pee-pee in wrong places...this is working so far.

Which provides more assurance that lodging is nice and safe to stay in? Gov't regulations of hotels, or dozens of user ratings of Airbnb places? I'll take Airbnb thanks.

Tell me how Yelp reviews would have prevented the Bath Schoolhouse Explosion that killed 400 children and teachers due to poor pipework done by an unlicensed plumber.

So maybe 1 of our 100 items is "fraud" or something. How many pages do you think it takes to define "fraud"? Is it better to have those definitions be legislative law, administrative law / regulation, or court opinions? If "none of the above", do you expect consistency?

One chamber of Congress must be exclusively responsible for dropping useless laws, not creating new ones.

Nice sentiment but it seems we will always need many domain-specific regulations that most people don’t need to remember (e.g., procedures for transporting radioactive materials, food and drug regulations, etc.). With that said, we should always try to minimize regulations.
