What exactly do people mean when they say there is a "_direct_ correlation" between two things? As opposed to what, an indirect correlation?

direct correlation is a positive correlation as opposed to negative correlations which are referred to as inverse correlations. I don't think you should act smug "they haven't passed statistics" when you guys didn't know this foundational, basic principle
