Freud thought children had a natural erotic drive that developed through stages and focused on the opposite sex parent. And the amount of repression and channeling/sublimation of that energy defined a person more or less. Not really trauma per se...

I think that for Nietzsche the idea of "survival" as the primary impetus for human behavior is too mundane. Will to power is not domination but elevation, like the drive of an artist to create a work of eternal beauty. Surviving is something a parasitic worm can do.

Is sex really all about reproduction (I mean in these days especially)? Survival of the species (sex for reproduction vs fun) is obviously the unconscious driver of sexual attraction, but it's not the language of love that shows itself to the individual.
