But isn’t intelligence/stupidity a topic that has been talked about for millennia? IQ is just another name for the same thing.

My understanding (as a non-expert) is that IQ tests were at first created to check for stupidity and were really useful for the military in weeding out individuals who would perform very poorly in the real world.

They were used by Binet to identify which kids could benefit from extra help in school, then they were used in WW1 to identify which recruits would do best in which jobs. In the century since, many other successful applications.
