Stationing American troops in foreign lands is not a policy of “endless war,” as our experience for decades in Europe and South Korea attest. It is often a way to support and protect allies and deter enemies. It can be costly and risky but it’s sloppy to call it “endless war.”

--We have about 800 military bases in about 70 countries. --Are they all strictly necessary for support & deterrence? --Did we ever have an open public discussion about the optimal number? --Couldn't we get along with maybe 50 bases in 10 countries?

Our proxies discuss the number of bases regularly. There’s even a Base Realignment and Closure commission that’s convened from time to time.

800 bases in 70 countries sounds like we occupy 70 countries.

Whatever the correct number of bases might be, I have very little confidence in it being properly derived through public opinion.

It would be nice to reply to this Don't you think that US became a tool of profit for its allies? It was a weapon used for profit. The EU & all alies profited from US being the police of the world or mediator of the world with war. Iraq war is proof of that US did the dirtywork

My thoughts exactly. One major base in each command district and a couple supporting ones. Everything else in the states and fewer in number.

Those governments are most often oppressive regimes. We keep bases in these countries to ensure friendly governments to US business interests. These bases are corporate welfare disguised as stability and serve to subjugate millions.
