I think it's a useful idea to grapple with and develop intellectual muscle. It seems to me the greatest mistake there is to overlook the meaning of life. Only recently the theme has garnered attention from good philosophers like Susan Wolf. You can't rely on utility to solve it.

Could that be research bias, though? Maybe those who are willing to answer questions about their subjective well being are just naturally happier people? Or, there could be social pressure to say you are happy, when you may not be? I personally think this is a difficult question.
