No, the fact that this is hard doesn’t make it laudable or even particularly Buddhist. Buddhism often discusses the temptation of self-abnegation as a powerful entrapment in just another net of desire and self-glorification.

I’ve done it in Thailand on concrete bed with a wood pillow. It’s not that hard. Dropout rate after 11 days was a mere 35% or so.
