For the first time, we dropped the GRE requirement for grad student applications this year. We have received over 100 more applications than last year (558 total!), so hopefully this has increased access to allow new candidates to apply.
GRE general + subject tests are about $350. Most grad students go thousands into debt during grad school. If they're not willing to spend $350 for the GRE, they might be unpleasantly surprised at the real cost of grad school. That's the real financial barrier.

They get paid a stipend when they’re in a biology PhD program. It depends on where you live as to whether it covers your costs of living or not. I think it’s ~$36k per year at Stanford, and there’s subsidized housing, though this is still too low.
