Do not team sports caps, political caps, and pussy hats mainly signal what team or tribe affiliation one has? And not so much signaling one's high moral. Does anyone put on a Trump hat for virtue signaling?

In the political/ideological realm, my hunch is that people care what team/tribe they're on only insofar as it advertises certain virtues that they think are important.

How would you describe the yellow vests in France in terms of virtue and/or tribal signaling?

Sometimes there's genuine pent-up outrage that drives mass movements to overthrow governments. I think yellow vests is more of a real rebellion than a set of virtue signals.
