Do not team sports caps, political caps, and pussy hats mainly signal what team or tribe affiliation one has? And not so much signaling one's high moral. Does anyone put on a Trump hat for virtue signaling?

In the political/ideological realm, my hunch is that people care what team/tribe they're on only insofar as it advertises certain virtues that they think are important.

What is the rationale of a company that virtue signals against the interest of their current demographic? I've seen this numerous times in companies that cater to nerd culture. Ex: signaling feminism to gamers, and then telling them to not buy the product if they don't like it.
