The thing about Blood Meridian is, though a novel, it is entirely built around a series of actual events occurring mostly in Chihuahua state in late mid-19th C, but also on both sides of border. Also, McCarthy is the most creative prose stylist in English since Skakespeare.

Wait, isn't that the one where at the end the protagonist is reunited with his childhood mentor?😉 A great, but grim book. I think we'd make better choices if more of us read and appreciated McCarthy.

And then there are those books where only parts are unbearable: I nominate IB Singer's Satan in Goray - the part when they think the leader's shoulder is dislocated when it's really broken, and they try to "put it back" 😱 Or the beginning and ending of Perfume by Süskind.

Yes to anything by McCarthy in the brutal/upsetting category but I always find them to be uplifting as well - "All the Pretty Horses" for sure.

That's one messed up book. When I finished it, I wasn't surprised to find out that some people thought of the Judge as the Devil. An evil, "illuminated" bastard.
