Imagine if car salespeople only sold young adults a car if the parents filled out paperwork and the car dealer took 'expected parental contributions' into account when pricing the vehicle.

In a way, yes. But administrators always talk about students as customers, and seem to give less consideration to the concerns of parents. Hmmm.

Inheritance Tax is for punishing children whose parents didn't spend that money on college fees.

You know, I can understand this with respect to students who are still dependent on Mommy and Daddy. But they've nearly entirely abandoned the concept of an "independent" student (except for a marriage bonus, among few exceptions).

I have often maintained the price of "name" colleges is "how much do you have in your pocket?"

I wasn’t in contact with my mother last semester (after I moved across the country after graduating hs) for reasons to do with her lack of parenting. My dad hadnt even filed for income taxes so I couldn’t use him either. I had 0 way of “dodging” this requirement as a 20 year old

I make $10k/year and my parents are middle class, I only got $6500/year from FAFSA, I’ll graduate with around $25-30k debt most likely. Expected family contribution was $18k, that’s unrealistic and really makes me feel like I’m pressuring them
