I would think the exact opposite would be masochism; negative utilitarianism sees pain as important only in the sense that it’s important to eliminate. One could argue that pain simply *is* the absence of joy, so a focus on eliminating pain isn’t necessarily contradicting Rand.

One point in favor of this inverse relationship between pain and joy is that depressives who claim to “feel nothing” still seem to be tortured by their neutrality. That suggests to me that a lack of joy is itself a kind of pain, and therefore they aren’t really independent.
