Y'all realize that if you 'make public colleges tuition-free', you're writing a blank check for college administrators to raise tuition rates to any level they want, and for tax-payers to be on the hook for trillions? It'll be like cost-plus contracts for the Pentagon.https://twitter.com/BernieSanders/status/1069649195961905153 …

How about subsidizing college education on the basis of merit? India does it and actually does it pretty well.

Sounds good, but not politically feasible here.

If you made me college czar, college quality would be far higher and costs would be far lower. I would have a loose management style - walking around carrying a big stick.

Right now, private colleges are far more ideological than public high schools. In a bad way.

Let real scientists take charge of education, start with IQ tests and write blank cheques. Then any price would be worth it...

Other countries that have “free” college accomplish this by paying professors and staff a pittance.

Our high schools are pushing out millions of kids who need an entire year of remedial classes just to be ready to take college level classes. We shouldn't be further worsening that situation.

Tuition-free could be accomplished by providing equity stakes in students. Colleges could be paid as a fraction (X) of (their graduates' salary-fraction (Y) of median income) for the first N years post-graduation. Solving for X, Y, and N is an exercise for the reader.

I'd recommend Baumol’s work on relative labor productivity. It suggests public investment in education (productivity) is a high-ROI way to reduce demand for govt services (transfers). Of course, that assumes it's done well.

IMO, the smart conservative move would be to engage with this debate and propose solutions that cost less and are more effective, vs ceding the entire debate to liberals. We could've had Romneycare, but will get single payer. The default path is the same for education.
