Harvard aims to use CRISPR gene editing to eliminate ApoE4 variant, to reduce Alzheimer's risk. My worry: ApoE4 already spread to 14% of white population, so it can't just be a harmful mutation -- must have had hidden benefits that gene-editing could lose.https://www.technologyreview.com/s/612494/despite-crispr-baby-controversy-harvard-university-will-begin-gene-editing-sperm/ …

Exactly why gene editing is a scary thought. Things like human beings are to complex to think one change only affects one part not more than one.

Yes it is difficult to quantify the advantage of elder survival vs cost and the numerically large attrition at young ages.

“Many” can be 100 or 100 billion. A meaningful figure would be given as a percentage ... or just a round assessment about whether a septuagenarian cromag was actually a normal thing, or just represents a tail on a bell curve that lucky finds will sometimes pick up ...

there is confusion between life expectancy at birth and biologic life span. out oif newbornd 1/5 did not make it to fist year; another 1/5 did not make it to 5yrs and then maybe another 1/5th of did not make it to 30 (males because trauma/violence women due to Ob complications).
-
If you got there then your likelihood to make it to 70 was better albeit not great. from antiquity sources most caracters died young. chronic conditions affcted pple in their 50s ( see the list of Roman emperors nd their causes of death).
