Conversation raised to an art is not a subject much discussed today, except for the utility of a purpose (I.e. manipulation of some form). But truly great conversations with minds seeking understanding, the divine spark of friendship, is taken from us the louder restaurants are.

Intimacy vs external stimuli. People are bored and boring.

Haven’t read Atlantic article yet, but I’ve written about this when that whole stupid trend of open kitchens kicked off. Linked to lifestyle (aspirational) & the star chef phenom, it spread to restaurants everywhere. Suddenly, hearing the hustle of (kitchen) staff was “cool.” 1/

Except it’s not cool insofar as it started a volume (noise) escalation as patrons had to speak louder, which created even more noise, & forced everyone to scream louder. Add pulsating “eat to the beat” music (‘cause it’s hip), and the cacophony ratchets up even more. 2/end

Theory: As people have become more isolated and bereft of actual community-building organizations, we've substituted noise and visual activity as the illusion of community.

I despair that this century's architects seem to have a gulag mentality with the ghastly concrete and glass boxes no style no class

Yes. And avoid swimming pool acoustics (reflective surfaces everywhere). We don't want to shout over the ambient noise at our dinner company.

In most NY restaurants or casual food places, the noise is unbearable. You become hoarse trying to have a conversation. It's not always the acoustics. The service is loud too.
