As English becomes the global common language, will the world become more efficient, peaceful, & empathetic? Or will talking directly with people from other cultures highlight our different views & values even more starkly?https://twitter.com/simongerman600/status/1069185412478963718 …

I would predict a continuation of the net positive effect we have seen over the last 100 years as well as the sharpening of divides over increasingly specific differences.

Only because it is quick to appropriate linguistics from different cultures. All languages do that, but English more than most: https://hypertextbook.com/facts/2001/JohnnyLing.shtml … Fascinating words that have no direct translation to English, like "schadenfreude", are fast adopted.

I think that in near future English will become even more commonly used, perhaps to the point of becoming truly universal language. It should make a lot of stuff easier as we become more cooperative, globalised, inclusive. Sure, there will be costs, but it's worth it.

It's an opportunity but not a given, that the world becomes more peaceful, efficient & empathetic.

Definitely will increase hostility toward one another. Think about how native anglophones treat those with a heavy accent vs those who speak no English at all. We get frustrated much more easily by those who can “almost” speak English

It will help to the extent people from different cultures have reason to communicate more fully in person as part of their daily lives. On the other hand, communicating only through the written word, such as through social media platforms, would only make things worse.

More efficient towards the production of goods. But in the near future less so on the other issues since we’re in the midst of ideological war were the Left already thinks it’s the pinnacle of love & understanding & therefore is closed to listening while thinking it’s open.
