Some people believe it's unethical to use CRISPR-cas9 technology to select for certain traits in human offspring. Was it ethical for our ancestors to use mate choice over the last few million years to select for certain traits in partners & offspring?

we don't call hitting a person who jump in front of a car unethical because there was no aim to wound/kill. We don't call legitimate defense killing unethical because the killing is just a side effect of protecting oneself. Impulsive murder is still murder: the aim is to kill.

The answer depends on the level of behavioural control, free will and accountability one is willing to attribute to an agent. A lion killing a human cannot be held accountable, in humans lack of emotional constraint in action could be judged unethical, but not necessarily so.

"Murder" implies intent. We do not call killing someone without knowledge 'unethical.' The problem lies in the presupposition of your premise: knowledgeable action which may hypothetically and ambiguous impact millions is equivalent to fucking a hot cave-chick. They aren't.

In hindsight, I should have said "... equivalent to hormonally crazed cave-teens getting it on." Makes the point a bit more clearly.
