Without taking a position on the question you’re asking/point you’re making, I fail to see how that analogy holds in any morally relevant sense.
Bc the key issue w/ CRISPR is whether it morally permissible for us to edit germ line genomes *given that we know that we don’t know the effects of each edit*. Ancestors had no analogous knowledge and thus faced no analogous moral problem.
I.e. “Do we have good enough explanatory theories about the effects of these edits to morally justify performing them?” is our question, which I don’t think our ancestors grappled with.
