This makes no sense in evolutionary game theory terms. If 'cads' always outbred 'dads' in prehistory, the human 'dad' strategy would have gone extinct (as in many species). Common reproductive strategies must have had nearly-equal reproductive success, averaged across env'ts.

There are ways around this, most notably female cuckoldry (proactive or retroactive). Women's sexual strategy plays a part in this too. If an Alpha can breed with more women, while Beta fathers accept parental investment of his kids it's a win-win-lose.

From a pure reproduction standpoint, sure. But does he win on a personal level by not being involved with his kids? Do they win? Does society?
