To the extent anything like this exists here, we do it to ourselves. Sort of big brothering one another, rather than having it directed from above. An organic censoriousness that has probably been common throughout human history. This Chinese system is far more terrifying.

Complaining about our political leaders doesn't show up on either of those things.

Our system is not anywhere near as totalitarian. This is super creepy, literally like a Black Mirror episode. We don't rate people for party loyalty in this sort of technical manner, nor do we report on everyone's social activities. I suppose it is a good warning.

For all it's faults, the "free society" is the freest one anywhere ever. People here on Twitter are blissfully ignorant to the reality of living in a not so free society,so they just take what they got for granted.

Does it matter that much the US tracking systems are private companies for the most part?

I think the singular data system China must have to do this is the most worrisome. The US has nothing comparable with our completely fragmented systems.

I think credit is nearly as bad but to a certain extent, credit check & background check is part of a agreement or a deal. You are forced on that agreement depending on circumstances but they still have a bit decency compared to what China is doing. They don't pretend to ask.
