Is it OK for people to advocate for the interests of groups that are larger than the individual but smaller than the human species -- like a family, neighborhood, city, nation, religion, race, or sex?

One might believe, say, that it's "Mostly not OK" to advocate for racial interests but "Yes, it's good and ethical" to advocate for family interest. I'm having a difficult time answering the question as is, but that could just be me.

And what does “OK” even mean? It’s immoral to advocate for the interests of one’s own ‘family’ at the expense of others but I wouldn’t judge the character of people who do this as harshly as I judge those who advocate for “racial interests”, unless it’s a Mafia family.
