Are screenwriters inhibited from depicting really happy, high-functioning marriages and families because they don't provide enough sustained drama? Asking for a culture without many good marital/family role models.

Sitcoms are a perfect example of bad familial role models. Headstrong and rebellious children, loutish or buffoonish husbands, with harried and fraying moms trying to hold it all together. Some buck the tropes more than others, but that’s mostly what I see.

I don’t think “inhibited” is the right word. More like market-driven. They write about what sells, and “normal” isn’t what sells.
