Research says there are (at least) three kinds of disgust: anti-pathogen disgust, sexual disgust, and moral disgust. They are often combined when trying to socially stigmatize an ideological enemy.

Moral disgust basically when people avoid doing "something" because there's something negative about the "thing." Then over time the people forget what the negative effect was, and in some cases the negative effect goes away, but people come up with reasons to avoid the "thing."
