America has: * a small but substantial minority of rabid nativists * a majority that's pro-immigration but whose top priorities are other things Basing the GOP's whole appeal on catering to the first of these two groups seems like a bad idea, but what do I know about politics?

Is it really a "substantial" group of people who support open borders? Maybe a substantial group of people who support amnesty, are generally inclined against border control, and would support more amnesties in the future, but even that's not the same thing.

*"there", not "it" in the first sentence To clarify, I think very few Americans would really support zero restrictions on people immigrating to this country. Perhaps the ones who do are disproportionately high-status, but even among high-status people it's an uncommon belief.
