In the hard sciences, maybe we're reaching the cognitive limits of what the human brain can comprehend. But in the behavioral sciences, we've already reached the ideological limits of what society can allow through the Overton window.https://twitter.com/NicoleBarbaro/status/1063433827819888643 …

“It’s getting harder to make important discoveries across the board. It’s requiring larger teams, far more extensive scientific training, and the overall economic impact is getting smaller...suggesting strong diminishing returns to our scientific efforts.” https://www.theatlantic.com/science/archive/2018/11/diminishing-returns-science/575665/ …

They require larger teams because individual scientist quality has degraded. They do their work in the day, drink soda, go home and watch mindless Netflix. Very few modern people in the field of science are open to the inspiration and sudden understandings that mark history.

How did the change come to happen? Is it due to post secondary education becoming more inclusive rather than demanding? Has education become a chore or a requirement for a job as opposed to a hobby? That is the question.

What can be discussed in public? what about in private scientific cloisters? Where is our ability to communicate being hampered? Is it the standards? The reverence for our senior faculty? Government approval? is it linguistics? Have we created a culture intolerant to change?

I think things are only stagnant by choice, by old patterns, and methods, old ways not being adapted to what just the internet has given us the ability to do. i think the problem isn't a resistence to change but the worry of the cost of that change as well as habit.

A PhD Student recently identified an entire new Kingdom of life, on a par with fungi and animalia, that sounds like pretty hard science to me.

I have observed that there’s actually two separate Overton windows in America, and they’ve diverged over the years such that the gap which ideas must fit through and remain acceptable has gotten much smaller. Venn Diagram style.

Additionally, the fringe ideas that are able to gain mainstream status on either side has gotten MUCH larger.
