Correction: Britain is perfectly able to leave the EU anytime it wants to protect its “sovereignty” (abject nonsense of course, used by people who don’t understand the concept of pooled sovereignty). It just can’t have its cake and eat it, as it wants to do.

Fair enough. But on that view we choose as a country to limit our sovereignty in all sorts of areas (NATO, for instance), as Theresa May herself pointed out in her excellent pre-referendum speech. Crucially, we can leave these arrangements at any time. https://youtu.be/rlI48PE0gOU

Just as we can leave the EU at any time. We don’t need to go through EU paperwork. We can just leave without a deal. But that would have serious consequences for the UK economy and for peace in Northern Ireland. So we choose, as a sovereign nation, to negotiate.
