Before doing a live speaking event, I asked my 16YO daughter “What might I do differently tonight?” She responded “Remind people to be compassionate with those who are struggling.” It’s a simple shift from the coerced compassion of call-out culture. Yet it changes everything.
Also, it's useful to remember that almost everybody is struggling with some combination of career worries, money worries, relationship issues, deep regrets, sexual shame, political frustration, and barely repressed existential terror. Hence the occasional irritability.
