'Free college for all' means colleges would become entirely financially controlled by the government. This means that what gets taught would become entirely ideologically controlled by the government. We're already halfway there. Think about it.

That’s a too broad statement to be of any value. Be specific on how it is systematically bad. This is mostly a question of regulation on how the financing works, though. On the whole, I’d say free universities have served us well in Europe.

It’s a simple exercise in thinking: initially current predilections would reign, & over time change 2 mirror the will of the head of the gov entity & US admin in charge or worse be reinforced 2 extreme social-political ideologies vs thousands of independent “wills”

US needs stronger rules on tenure due to weaker unions & employment regulation, so academic freedom is better spelled out there. However, in Europe Professors often enjoy similar protection in practice anyway. Lots of radical academics state-funded in the past eg cultural theory.

There's far more cultural taboos in US universities. And we don't have to go into life-long debt for the privilege of being told we can't have a real debate due to 'safe spaces' etc...

Which taboos in European universities are academics in private US universities not subject to?
