There are many intellectual taboos in European universities, and usually no free speech protections. State control is invisible if you buy into the state's ideology.

I’m thinking that lots of country with free ed seem to have solid schools.

Can those schools teach about evolved sex differences, heritable intelligence, the downsides of multiculturalism, or any other taboo topics?

We have this system in Finland, and we actually have much more academic freedom than you guys do -- we don't have this same safe space craziness as you do. Government stays out of the contents of the course content. The independence of Universities is guaranteed by the law.

In South Africa, what is taught in university is ideology, not knowledge. The government controls and has 'transformed' academia into its own image. It is free, because students are the product, not the customer.

Not to mention that there's actually no such thing as free college.

Most countries with "free uni" also have strict segmenting and segregation programs that split out "underperforming" students and funnel them into public service or trades. Not a bad thing - but it's not the "everyone goes for free" ideal many think it is.
