In some religions blasphemy laws are capital offenses. While death can serve as a component to repentance in Judaism, I wouldn't call it a vast improvement over the current situation.

Also, blasphemy has a direction or a clear target. For example, don't target God with blasphemy but hate speech?Who's the target? What defines hate speech? It can change from one individual to another. Hate speech is basically have blasphemy laws for thousands of gods.
