An associate professor makes grad students teach their classes. An adjunct has to teach their own classes.

I don't, but English isn't even my native language and I have to look up official terms all the time, because they don't match neither the Russian terms (my native language) nor the Latvian ones (I live in Latvia, but I pretty much don't know Latvian at all)

You said not to look it up, but then how will you know whether the data you get is accurate and not just peoples egotism? Any way, I did look it up and I was not entirely correct, so answered 'sort of'. :)

Working hypothesis: this is why some people adjunct when they could achieve more success outside academia. To students and the public, they're still a professor. Hard to give up if you're really invested in that identity.
