Anyone who thinks metro systems in cities like New York or DC suck because they don't have enough funding is a fool. The MTA's annual operating budget is $15 billion. That's higher than the GDP of 70 countries.

The NYC subway is embarrassing and depressing. Almost every station has a Metro 2033 vibe.

The Hong Kong MTR is widely considered the best mass transit system in the world. It is an infinitely better model than the MTA. The MTR is new, clean, efficient, reliable (99% on-time rate), platform screen doors in every station, etc. The contrast with New York is stark.

I found the London tube to be far superior to the NYC subway. Cleaner, too. When in NY, I take cabs.

I'm sorry, what? London's trains are A W F U L. Entire sections of the network are down for days at a time.

I was there last winter, didn't have any major issues. Only 1 line was down and you could still get to the main stops from other lines. Only time it really sucked was when everyone got out of work and tried to leave the city at the same time. No major delays though.
