So if you are an author and you know that you have 1million followers, that’s not good enough unless random people are aware that you have that many followers? I don’t think he is proposing hiding it from existence, just not publicly available.

Yes - at least how I understand it, by removing follower counts,
@jack is basically proposing limits to how social proof is used to gain new followers. But seeing the # of retweets and replys will still be there. As will reach. I’m ambivalent, but it might improve quality.
