This is also, obviously, a way to de-legitimize people with un-PC opinions but high follower counts, so nobody else can tell how popular their views might really be.

If Twitter were to hide follower counts, it would be an awful act of self-mutilation. This site is used by writers/thinkers largely to credentialise influence via follower counts. Without the ability to nurture such credentials, the incentive to use Twitter will be lost to many.

If this happens it would be similar to FCC limiting radio licenses. Any account with a large following would be extremely valuable because it would be much harder to break through unless you were famous.

It would benefit incumbents over new creators.

Well, it would affect all authors equally and there's nothing publishers could do about it, so I don't see the issue. Publishers might be annoyed, but authors would be fine.

How on God's green Earth does it affect authors with 200 followers who joined Twitter last week the same as it affects authors who have built up 200k followers over years of dedicated engagement?

Its not a sunk cost. A sunk cost has zero net present value. A Twitter following can have real value like a brand, client list, newspaper column or domain name. Deleting it has substantive impact on the users ability to reach their audience.
