Problem is, publishing anonymously won't help one's CV or citation count....

If you're going to publish something controversial, it's better for your CV to do it anonymously.

But it is generally the original order for most, is it not? To get at the idea, to study, research and refine that idea, I am guessing is why most in academia are there to begin with. Careers matter, but do they at the expense of an academic soul?

Agree. You may get more senior, tenured professors who have the time to spend on a pet paper. But young academics don’t have time to waste on non-career advancement work. Also going to get lots of PhD crackpots. Peer-review will be a nightmare
