Quick: name a civilizational value, ideal, or aspiration that is shared by at least 80% of Americans. Are there any?

I still disagree with this contention. I think most of these principles are well engrained. How people respond to no-stakes polls is, imo, a nearly useless metric and probably worse than useless because it gives the wrong impression of reality

Completely agree. I sometimes think for 10 minutes before finally clicking the answer. At least 2 of those are spend on thinking about how I'm in the tiniest minority of people who spend that time.

Oh, let's not imagine some kind of golden age. When do you think there was a shared value, and what do you think it was?

I'm guessing this dynamic is what has been driving the foundation of new colonies throughout our history. More than economic opportunity, escape from hostile clash of worldviews.

Can we retire the lazy, empty, self-congratulatory trope that “food connects people”? Because it doesn’t. People connect people. It’s not the food, it’s the table.

When things are going so well, lower values on our hierarchy of values surface. It is the same as the 2nd law of thermodynamics. Societies breakdown without a common bond.
