Thought engaging itself is as addictive as any drug & ultimately it can be as fatal. For without grounding the highest abstractions provide a sense of limitless possibilities, but when they escape the shackles of earth they don’t transcend to heaven, they fall into hell.
One of my best friends from high school studied under de Man at Yale in the early 80s. The edgy, transgressive excitement was palpable. Derrida was God. Every student got swept up in it. I did too, for a couple of years.
