When writing term papers, why do so many college students spend the first two pages defining terms that every adult knows, by quoting online dictionaries? Is this something high school teachers encourage? Genuinely curious.

In high school we were taught to define every term, even if it was deemed to be common knowledge to ensure it was impossible for the reader (teacher) to be confused about what you meant. Dumbest thing ever, but I think a majority of HS teachers do this now
That is truly appalling. What HS teachers do, college teachers must undo....

My best guess is that some teacher somewhere had a severe disagreement with a student about what a particular term meant, and now it’s common practice
