When writing term papers, why do so many college students spend the first two pages defining terms that every adult knows, by quoting online dictionaries? Is this something high school teachers encourage? Genuinely curious.

In high school we were taught to define every term, even if it was deemed to be common knowledge to ensure it was impossible for the reader (teacher) to be confused about what you meant. Dumbest thing ever, but I think a majority of HS teachers do this now

My guess (& experience correcting) is that students try to hit "Key words" corresponding to the question. They match enough of these & it's assumed there's enough conceptual knowledge on the topic for a reward. Lazy correcting? Bad teaching? Filling a word count?
